“The Lakota Scout” breastplate, Museum Quality Historical recreation.
This is a “recreation”, and not a “replica”, in the sense that it is not a reproduction of a documented existing piece. Rather than a technical copy, this is an original creation made in the genuine spirit and style of a piece that could have been crafted in the latter part of the 19th century, in a style reminiscent of the Lakota (Sioux).
The centerpiece is a genuine antique US Cavalry brass horse bridle rosette from the Civil War/Indian Wars era (circa 1860-1870). On the sides, 2 antique hand-hammered brass conchos with dark translucent red padre beads, brass cones, and horse hair locks.
41 rows of antiqued Canadian wapiti (elk) bone hairpipe, solid vintage French brass beads, red white hearts beads. Hand-cut and oiled Canadian deerskin fringes (there are 18 metres of fringe on this piece…). Dark translucent red padre beads and brass beads on the neck loops, with traditional brass hawk bells on the bottom loops.
The protective medicine pouch at the bottom center, made of deerskin, contains 2 medicinal plants, in the traditional way, its edge is beaded with vintage old stock dark translucent prune beads using a traditional Ojibwe technique, and the pouch is closed with 4 rows of antique turquoise seed beads.
The finished piece was smoked over a campfire, with white sage, sweetgrass and cedar.
Original one-of-a-kind creation.
