“The Blackfeet Holy Man” Medicine Necklace Historical recreation.
This piece is a recreation of a medicine necklace, as worn by many tribes of the Plains and Plateau, in this case of Blackfeet inspiration. No two medicine necklaces were ever the same, as they were very individual and sacred possessions, meant to protect the wearer, according to many elements, symbols, and talismans that were strictly personal, and most of the times known by the wearer only.
The main elements of this necklace are the genuine buffalo teeth and badger claws, dressed with green pigment-dyed deerskin and Stroud trade wool, adorned by 18th century Venetian Cross Trails beads, 19th century Venetian cobalt and ruby red beads, and brass beads.
The centerpiece is an ochre-dyed medicine pouch, heavily adorned as was the habit. It contains 2 medicinal plants, in the traditional way, its edge is beaded with antique Bodmer Blue seed beads using a traditional Ojibwe technique, and the pouch is secured to the necklace by a rawhide strip.
It should be noted that the deerskin the pouch was cut out of is a 20 year-old ceremonial drum skin that was “retired from service”.
From the pouch hang a series of delicate dangles of ochre deerskin ornamented with a variety of antique beads of diverse colors and sizes, an 18th century Venetian Cross Trails bead, an antique brass boot button, and an 18th century Chinese coin, also a strip of antique green French ribbon.
The necklace is mounted on genuine sinew and ochre-dyed deerskin.
This is a “recreation”, and not a “replica”, in the sense that it is not a reproduction of a documented existing piece. Rather than a technical copy, this is an original creation made in the genuine spirit and style of a piece that could have been crafted in the 1850’s, in a style reminiscent of the Blackfeet.
The finished piece was smoked over a campfire, with white sage, juniper and cedar.
Original one-of-a-kind creation.
