Ojibwe Pipe, Museum Quality Historical restoration.
This is a historical restoration/recreation of an elbow pipe in the traditional style of the Ojibwe people.
The stem is made of a hard wood, possibly hickory, the pipe end of the stem and mouthpiece are inserts, added into what seems to have been originally a branch with a hollowed out natural cavity. The stem consists of a typical twisted part, and a straight half that is beautifully oval and tapered. There are traces of an older red pigment.
The finished piece features a knife-carved soapstone (steatite) bowl in a traditional elbow shape.
The stem was rubbed with natural wax to bring out the beautiful contrast in this two-tone piece of wood, the twist was rubbed with natural mineral red and vegetal black pigment. The pipe is decorated with 19th century French silk ribbons in light blue (showing some discoloration from light), red, and gold, and beadwork featuring antique seed beads in Bodmer blue, Cheyenne pink, and translucent light lavender. Underneath the pipe, fastened by deerskin lace, a traditional lock of horse hair. The lace itself is decorated with a 19th century Venetian “Cross Trails” bead, and various 19th century beads in Cheyenne Pink, cobalt, clear, striped, and red white hearts.
The pipe is fully functional, but has not been fired up, allowing for it to be presented assembled.
The stem measures 66cm, the total assembled length is 77cm.
