Description

Carlson doll of a Mescalero Apache singer, with water drum and loop stick.

The Carlson Dolls Society was created in 1946, in Maple Lake City, state of Minnesota, USA.

Ever since this date, a growingly important number of collectors have appreciated the variety of indian dolls created and presented by this company (over 200 different indian tribes).

Today these dolls are purchased in various touristic places all over the US – we can find them even in the trading posts, National Parks such as Grand Canyon, as well as in gift shops at museums or at certain airports as “indian curios souvenirs”. Due to their popularity, some imitations made in China or elsewhere were put on the market, but it is really easy to tell the difference between a real Carlson Doll and one from another production.

In any case, since the 1980’s, some Native American crafts people got an inspiration and started to buy some of those Carlson indian dolls to revisit and remaster them with a touch more authenticity, and re-dressed them with their own traditional outfit styles. Later on, these new special and unique creations have been prized and purchased by collectors as well as by some local museums in the US, who consider these pieces as “ethnic material” for display.

Most of the dolls shown in this private collection belong to this category. Right now, in the USA as well as in Canada, they are highly sought after and prized more and more.
